Hiring has stalled, here too
U.S. employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, and 2026 is averaging 68,000 a month. Closer to home, the Oakland, Fremont and Berkeley metro division, which takes in Newark and the rest of Alameda County, added only about 500 jobs from December to August, while the San Jose area added 14,700.
